When is the best time to write it?

I am not talking about time of day here, but rather whether you should write your headline before or after the main body of your text.

To be honest, it is a matter of personal preference. There is no right or wrong answer – go with whatever feels right for you.

Tip:

It needs to be long enough to grab your reader’s attention without sending them to sleep.

It is best to write several headlines and then pick the best one. Brainstorm ideas – you’ll be amazed what you come up with.

Forget the full stop

Yes, I know that all through school it was drummed into you that the end of every sentence must be followed by a full stop.

But never, never, never, end your headline with a full stop.

Why?

Just think about it for a second. What does a full stop tell your reader to do?

and that is the last thing you want to happen.

How long should it be?

It should be as long as necessary to get your message across.

But be sensible. A headline that goes on forever will be a total turn

off.
